Event Details

We all know tap dance is very different from ballet. But when it comes to indigenous dance styles, what are the different forms? How would a visitor to the powwow recognize different dance categories? What do dancers do to prepare for a powwow?

In preparation for the upcoming UTTC International Powwow, MMPL is partnering with the Sacred Pipe Resource Center for a series of classes on the various cultures, traditions, and dances that are showcased at this annual powwow.

Each class will provide information about a different topic related to powwows: pow-wow visitor etiquette and expectations, powwow music, and different pow-wow dance styles. This will be especially useful for anyone non-Native who is interested in attending the powwow, but is unsure what to expect/how to show respect as a visitor.

It is not required to attend all classes within the series, but each class will highlight a different feature of the powwow, so it will be worthwhile to attend all of them!

August 15 - POWWOW HISTORY & VISITOR ETIQUETTE: This session will cover all of the basics for attending the United Tribes International Powwow on September 6-8, including the history of the event in Bismarck; what you need to know about prices; food options; times and events; what you need to bring; and some basic powwow etiquette.

August 22 - POWOW SONGS & THEIR CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE: This session will provide participants with an overview of the different types of songs they will hear at the United Tribes International Powwow on September 6-8, including the different types of songs that go with different dance categories; honor songs; and more.

August 29 - POWWOW DANCE STYLES: This session will showcase the different dance styles that may be seen at the United Tribes International Powwow, including southern styles and variations of both southern and northern styles.
