Program Description

Event Details

Did you know that North Dakota is one of two states in which all counties have been classified as Zone 1 areas? Zone 1 is the EPA's highest ranking of potential risk for elevated radon exposure.

Radon is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas. Prolonged exposure to radon can be detrimental to your health and is the second leading cause to lung cancer.

How do you know if radon is in your home or workplace? What can you do to mitigate radon's presence and effects?

Dr. Field, MD, a regional health officer that oversees public health initiatives for Western Plains Public Health, Kidder County District Health Unit, and Emmons County Public Health, will lead a discussion about the health impacts from high levels of radon in your home.

In addition, Justin Otto from ND Department of Environmental Quality-Division of Waste Management, the subject matter expert for radon in North Dakota, will address the importance of testing your home for radon levels and provide insight into mitigation options.

MMPL is excited to announce that Radon Monitoring kits are now available for checkout to patrons. Using this tool is the first action step to help individuals measure levels of Radon that may or may not exist in their home or workplace.

This discussion will take place by the MMPL Fireplace, located on the East end of the Main Library building. All are welcome.

National Prepare-A-Thon day looks to raise awareness among individuals, families, employers, communities, and leaders to consider creating action plans and collecting supplies for emergency events. Staying informed and prepared can make the difference in a crisis.
